Peter, Paul And Mommy (1974)

I know that I have never slept
safe
in anyone's arms
that angels never watched
over me
and so
it does not surprise me
that you sing no lullabies
to little girls.
I was
a female Paul Bunyan
who on my first day of life
ate a seed
became a mommy.

22 years later
I am "girl"
as though men's kisses
cradled me, soothed me
did not ask me
     to forget
this small strength that I have
     to say that I
     am a woman
and in that woman is a child
an I will sing to her
